Bahamas Youth Shine on the World Stage at U-16 World Youth Chess Olympiad

The city of Barranquilla has written a new chapter in the history of international chess. From August 16 to 23, 2025, the Colombian Caribbean capital became the heart of the chess world, hosting the U-16 World Youth Chess Olympiad—an unforgettable event that brought together more than 45 delegations from five continents.

For eight days, the playing hall was filled with strategy, talent, and dreams. The ticking of clocks, the silence of concentration, and the emotions of every move transformed Barranquilla into a true temple of youth chess. Among the nations present, Team Bahamas stood tall – Sohan Umesh, WCM Chika Pride, Danica Rolle and Caerwyn Turnquest proudly representing the archipelago and proving that the next generation of Bahamian chess players is ready to compete against the best in the world.

This historic participation was made possible thanks to the generous backing of Bahamas Power and Light (BPL), whose commitment to youth development and cultural excellence ensured that the Bahamian flag flew high in Colombia. Their support allowed the young players to gain invaluable international experience and showcase Bahamian talent on a global stage.

Achievements that Mark a Milestone

For two rising stars, WCM Chika Pride and Caerwyn Turnquest, the Youth Olympiad will forever remain a landmark event. Both players will earn their official FIDE rating in Rapid chess, a major milestone that marks their entry into the international Rapid Chess rankings. Notably, the duo will now be rated in all chess formats: Classical, Rapid, and Blitz – previously held by only the #1 ranked player for the Bahamas, WFM Polina Karelina.

This achievement is not only personal but also a triumph for Bahamian chess, as it expands the country’s presence within the global chess community. During this year’s summer Pan American Chess Youth Festival, team Bahamas earned similar results, with pending Blitz ratings for some of the national youth team. Bahamas Chess Federation is pleased that this summer’s exposure has set the national team up to be a strong contender for even more wins and a high probability of medals at the CAC Youth Chess Festival in Puerto Rico this December.

Battling Giants – And Holding Their Ground

The Bahamas team faced many stronger youth squads in the world—countries with deep chess traditions, larger player pools, and extensive resources. Yet, round after round, the Bahamian players proved hard to beat. They secured important wins and draws against formidable opponents, often defying expectations and showing composure under pressure.

This resilience demonstrated the progress of Bahamian chess. Each victory and hard-fought draw were a testament to the discipline, preparation, and sheer determination of the players. Against the odds, Team Bahamas showed that the future of the game in the islands is bright.

More than a Competition

Beyond the results, the Youth Olympiad was a celebration of culture and unity. Players from around the world, speaking different languages and living in different realities, found common ground on the 64 squares. For the Bahamas, it was an opportunity to forge friendships, exchange ideas, and build confidence for future competitions.

With the experience gained in Barranquilla, the Bahamas team has taken an important stride forward. Their performance at the U-16 World Youth Chess Olympiad proves that the nation can stand tall among international competitors.
